Overview
Murmuration is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting progressive civic engagement by equipping partners with data, tools, and research to help drive meaningful impact in communities. Their work enables activists, organizers, and community leaders to better understand and target outreach efforts that advance social causes.
They came to us with a challenge: their internal design team was stretched thin and lacked resources to tackle complex, high-impact projects. These included large-scale research initiatives, enabling data sharing across organizations, and refining a design system optimized for scalability and consistency across multiple platform features.
We partnered with Murmuration as an extension of their design team, leading critical projects with minimal oversight. We focused on creating an evolving design system, improving key platform features, and facilitating workshops to embed best practices for design and research. Our deep understanding of their mission and user needs allowed us to design with clarity and cohesion while filling gaps where extra capacity was needed.

Why it matters
Process
Embedded as senior designers on the team, we worked like internal members—attending all product and design meetings, leading research initiatives, and tailoring experiences for diverse user roles such as community builders, canvassers, and campaign managers.
This model allowed us to gain a deep understanding of both the business and the users, not just executing designs but helping identify areas for improvement. For example, by closely collaborating with stakeholders and analyzing user workflows, we uncovered opportunities to streamline role assignments and permission settings, which reduced user confusion and minimized errors in access management.
Craft
Our design craft emphasized scalability, clarity, and empathy. We not only designed features individually but also considered them holistically from a platform perspective, ensuring that both functionality and visuals stayed consistent across areas. We proactively identified dependencies and collaborated with other teams to create a seamless, cohesive experience.
Throughout, we conducted research and usability testing tailored to Murmuration’s specific users—taking into account factors like less tech-savvy users and smaller monitor sizes—to ensure intuitive, accessible interactions. Additionally, we continuously updated outdated design patterns, maintaining a modern, efficient platform that evolves with its users.
